THE WHITSUNDAY MARINE ACADEMY

Competent Crew Certificate

The Competent Crew Certificate is a very comprehensive course that will give you the skills to become an active crew member of a yacht.

You can complete your Competent Crew Course on a:

Cruise Style Days Pre-requisite
Learn to Sail
3 days / 2 nights
Introductory Course or similar practical experience
Learn to Sail
6 days / 5 nights
No previous experience required
Cruising & Learning 6 days / 5 nights No previous experience required
Coastal Passage
6 days / 5 nights
Coastal Passages are not a soft adventure. Pre-requisites depend on the passage however at a minimum 2-3 days prior sailing experience outside a harbor is required.
 
 
 

The syllabus on either the three, four or six day course is the same however on the longer courses you have more time available to practice your new found skills.
The Instructor and crew will meet you at the Abel Point Marina, Airlie Beach on the first day and the vessel will head out to sea within a few hours following a full vessel and safety briefing.

Nautical Knowledge
  Terminology, Relative Directions, Parts of Boat, Rig and Sail, Stability, Rules and Regulations, Local, National, International Rules for the prevention of collision at sea, Seamanship
Personal Safety
  Protection against the elements, Personal Protective Clothing, Life Jackets, Life Rafts, Safety Equipment, Distress Signals, Fire prevention and extinguishers, Man overboard.
Ropework
  Properties, types, Coiling and Care of Ropes and Sheets, Knots, Splicing, Safe and Correct Use of Winches
Boat Handling
  The Points of Sail, Tacking and Jibing, Theory of sail, Trimming, Reefing, Changing to meet conditions, Mooring, Coming along side a wharf/Jetty, Anchors, Anchoring, Night Sailing, Dinghies, Helming
Engineering
  Different types of engines, Fuel, Safety, Propeller Types, Engine Checks, Routine preventative maintenance, Batteries, Tool kit, Spares, Bilge Pumps,
Meteorology
  Know the sources of weather forecasts, Terminology, Interpret Forecasts and Charts, Use of Barometer.
Communication
  Types of marine radio, Operations, Distress, Urgency and Safety Operations incl. DSC, Australian Communications Authority Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency. Sound Signals in restricted visibility, Lights and Day Shapes, Flags.
Passage, Planning & Preparation
  Preparation of vessel, Monitoring weather forecasts, Allowing for wind and tide, Safety Briefing, Organising watches, Progress reporting, Local Knowledge.
Navigation
  The Compass, Deviation & Variation, Chart Work, Scale, Land Sea Definition, Depths, Common symbols, 5011 and use of, Use of navigation drawing instruments, Taking and plotting fixes, Depth Sounder, Logs and DR Fix, Keeping Records, IALA System of Buoyage, Tides and rule of 12ths, GPS.
